First of all,
Huge thanks to our teachers, Brian and Bill, who've truly delivered life-giving words about God over the last few weeks. We wrestled with how the story of Jesus that Paul tells through an ancient hymn (Phil. 2:5-11) informs our understanding of humble servant hood, and of what it means to live a life of status marked by downward mobility, or "upside down" servant hood- putting others before ourselves. We wrestled with Paul's words in the following passages about working out our "salvation", a word we're convinced is described in the following phrase where Paul reflects back on salvation as the "work of God in us to will and work, aligned with God's purposes" (redemption, wholeness, healing, full humanity, justice...etc.). Apparently God is working this new life in us, and inviting us to work it out in our lives and in the world. So, let's continue the conversation:
What does a lifestyle of this kind of "downward mobility" in terms of servant hood look like in the context of the American dream?
What does it look like for us to work out this kind of holistic salvation, that neither begins when we die, nor ends when we've prayed a prayer? What is our salvation in process inviting us into?
